libstrangle For The Lazy Ones

Never heard of → libstrangle? It's a FPS limiter library which can be LD_PRELOADed in order to run a game with a specified max FPS. I'm using it to reduce my laptop's heat exhaust and to keep my hot-headed Vega chilled. I've built a simple Debian package with the help of "checkinstall". It's not (yet) in my repo but you can safely download (AMD64) it from my site.

Wine-Staging-Nine 3.3 Tarball

Nick Sarnie has prepared a fresh build of Wine-Staging with Gallium-Nine patches. I've repackaged them for PoL and uploaded them here. You can also install them "the lazy way" with this one-liner:

wget -qO- | tar xvJ -C ~/.PlayOnLinux/wine/linux-x86/

DXVK Makes Great Progress!

Wow, that's been unexpected. DXVK, which aims to deliver D3D11 via Vulkan, has made great progress. It seems that it's able to render NieR:Automata correctly:

Groundhog Day: Two Worlds II

Remember when I posted that TW2 will arrive on May, 25th? And troublesome release dates, delays, and so on? Guess what. TW2 for Linux has been delayed to June, 15th. Seems that we've gotta wait again 😃

Ports Missing In Action

I've decided to post about missing Linux ports which have been promised by devs, publishers and so on. These are games which I'm personally waiting for. If you want a even more complete "hall of shame", visit →

  1. Darksiders

Went from "it's nearly there" via "someone else will be handling it" to "port? which port?" in about three years. The first and last game which I've bought because of a promised Linux port.

  2. Shadow Warrior 2

Announced with a SteamOS icon which has been removed later, Shadow Warrior 2 has a troublesome story which I have partially covered here. The game was released in Oct. 2016 for PC and their port is still missing.

  3. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

It's story is similar to Darksiders'. It's so troublesome that → gamingonlinux has a timeline for it. Their last statement was:

I’m afraid that currently we have no information to share regarding the Linux version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
I'd be surprised if we'd see a Linux port anyway.

These games are cheap now. I wonder if these/their publishers are gonna complain "Linux doesn't create enough income to satisfy porting costs/to be worthwile" if they are released soon. It probably would have been, if their ports would have arrived early enough.

Want To Enable D3D11 w/WINE On Mesa?

If you want to try D3D11 on Linux with WINE on Radeon GPUs with Mesa, you've got to tell WINE, that it has to use OpenGL Core Profile Contexts:

Just add MaxGLVersion (dword) with 0x30002 to HKCU/Software/Wine/Direct3D and you're fine.

Two Worlds II Finally Coming To Linux

Better late than never: TopWare's Two Worlds II, successor of their so-so RPG Two Worlds, is finally coming to Linux with a brand-new DLC and "HD Engine Update".

Their new DLC "Call of the Tenebrae" will be delivered along their new engine on May 25th. TopWare has already → confirmed that on GoL.

The original game has been released in 2010. TopWare has repeatedly promised a Linux port since 2013 with several missed release dates. Their latest attempt should have been released in 2015. On the other hand they have successfully "wine-ported" several games to Linux, including the first installment of their Two Worlds series, and even a native port with Vendetta: Curse of the Raven's Cry.

I'm curious! Btw: It's dirt cheap on → Steam at the moment!
