Clean Up Your System With Apt-Get

Do you want more free space on /? Because this is how you get more free space on /!

This removes obsolete packages, their dependencies and their configuration:

# apt-get autoremove --purge [package name]

(If you omit the package name, apt-get just purges obsolete packages.)

This removes old deb-archives from /var/cache:

# apt-get autoclean

Before:

$ du -h /var/cache/apt/archives/
4,0K    /var/cache/apt/archives/partial
650M    /var/cache/apt/archives/

After:

$ du -h /var/cache/apt/archives/
4,0K    /var/cache/apt/archives/partial
372M    /var/cache/apt/archives/

This removes all deb-archives from /var/cache:

# apt-get clean

Before:

$ du -h /var/cache/apt/archives/
4,0K    /var/cache/apt/archives/partial
372M    /var/cache/apt/archives/

After:

$ du -h /var/cache/apt/archives/
4,0K    /var/cache/apt/archives/partial
116K    /var/cache/apt/archives/
